Visiting a museum in Hellevoetsluis several spouttype funnels (probably full blown waterspouts on the 'Brielse Meer) were seen to the Northwest.
In the evening after a walk near the 'Rhoonse Grienden' I saw the beginning of what was to become a long living spouttype funnel. Around Pentecost (June) several set ups looked favorable, but......
Some examples of convection I did see on april 25, may 9, 10, 22 and 23.

Some of them were suspect of having rotational updrafts.
I departed from work somewhat earlier tot have the chance to drive through them.......

This Sunday a trough with temps of -30 C at the 500 Hpasc. level passed the Netherlands bringing some storms. There were no chances for real severe weather events, although I wouldn't have been surprised to see a landspout. Great was the mammatus display at around 16 hrs. LT.

The cells managed to evolve in a low Cape - high shear environment. The cells I observed more westward surely had some potential as well, but probably the better low level shear with more 'backing winds' was further eastwards. At the end of the chase I saw a (most likely) spout type funnel cloudConvective Weatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07007183227931504106noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2708592978856416024.post-54726455210047706112013-08-06T22:10:00.002+02:002013-08-10T21:36:00.890+02:00Make my day... supercells 5th of August 2013One day can make a whole season.... Last Monday was such a kind of day. There was a promising shear/ just enough instability overlap and several supercells formed above the Netherlands. Many of them with a LP- ish look.
Already in the afternoon the cumuli showed a 'shear effect'. Around 8 PM I started the chase because a 'left split' supercell moved from Belgium to the Netherlands. Where e.g. 'Estofex' issued several times a Level 2 or even 3 above the Benelux; even untill the moment of this writing it didn't actually work out that way. For last Saturday a level 3 was issued for a change of tornadic supercells. In the morning a very nice squall line covered the width of the Netherlands and a multi layered shelf Convective Weatherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07007183227931504106noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2708592978856416024.post-25063159524644224062013-06-14T21:19:00.001+02:002013-06-14T21:23:35.185+02:00Severe weather chance week 25 of 2013Next week the chance exists that severe weather will effect the low countries. The most closeby is Monday 17 th of June. Instability, shear and SCP/ STP parameters look great; so supercells with perhaps tornadoes will be possible. Also the rest of the week there could be potential for real severe weather as the warm/ colder air border is closeby.
To be continued....

Impressive instability is on the other hand also closeby and over the low countries present. Combined with interesting shear values probably Friday 17 th of May might be a day to watch out for.
Probably this period could lead to another chase account.

Despite this only few others seemed to be aware of the potential this day. The Estofex forecast first did not come with a warning and did not see 'lightning potential', but during the day itself an update to a Level 1 was given. There where a few tornadic and waterspout events seen by others. The high expectations of a few Estofex Level 2 forecasts were several times not 'cashed'. A strong 'CAP' or premature flow of colder western winds spoiled the game.

A CAP needed to be broken; and this happened late in the afternoon at the expected western part of Belgium. The gross convection soon got the characteristics of a supercell on plain radar. Observations from the field confirmed my diagnosis.

Circumstances were probably enough for waterspout formation, so I decided to drive to the Flevoland region. Because the convection would start from the west; I drove along the coastline (A4 The Hague- Amsterdam) and so did a lucky shot.
